FFMC Web 2006 Version 0.1

The main vision and aim for this change has been to accomplish a few things:

Make a site that is more visually attractive than the previous site, including many more pictures.

  • Create a site that can be modified by a variety of people and not owned by one person.
  • Primary focus on adults accessing the site as seekers or enquirers.
  • Secondary focus on our church family and making information available to them.
  • Get it ‘good enough’ for now.

What’s in Version 0.1

  • Implemented a content management system (joomla) that allows any user with the correct permissions to make changes to the content, but not to the template of the site (how it looks).
  • Implemented a document store capability where many types of files can be stored and downloaded.
    • Files are structured into categories (folders)
      • Categories established for ‘Overview Material’, ‘Bulletins’, ‘Sermon Series’.
      • Any user with the appropriate permissions can add items to a category
      • Adding categories can be done by an administrator easily.
  • Content on the site can be limited to everyone or to ‘registered users’.
    • Anyone can register from the home page
    • Requires an email address
    • Self-service
  • Web site content (outside the document store) is structured into sections, categories and items.
    • A number of sections have been created
    • A number of categories have been created
    • A number of items have been created
  • Template structure showing from the top down
    • Church ‘logo’
    • ‘Home’, 'Search' and ‘Contact Us’ mini-menu
    • Scrolling page of 5 things we want to highlight
      • Click on these to go the relevant page
      • Just need a graphic to change
    • 'Events' and 'Can we help?' graphics and links.
    • Main Menu linking to all of the content
    • Upcoming events showing information in the calendar
    • The home page shows a couple of extra bits
      • Login – allow people to register and login
      • Syndication – allowing people to syndicate (if you don’t know what this is then don’t worry about it)
    • The main content which is selected from the content items that we want to highlight.
  • The main sections in the structure are:
    • What is on? – bringing attention to the ‘major’ events
    • What should I expect when I visit? – bringing attention to the Sunday experience and to the weekly programme
    • What does FFMC have for my family?
      • For Adults – talking about each of the adult ministries
      • For Young People – point straight to FurnaceNetwork
      • For Children – talking about each of the children’s ministries.
    • Do you have a question? – providing the ability for someone to email a question in, but also providing a whole set of items which talk to different ‘seeker’ questions.
    • The FFMC story – talking about who we are and what we believe
    • More information here
      • Staff – talking about the staff
      • Contact Us – providing contact information
      • Resources – showing all of the document store
      • Search – providing search across the site
      • Web Site Background
  • Events Calendar
    • We have also implemented a church calendar function showing information about upcoming ‘major’ events this is separate to the ‘what is on?’ section because it is more focussed at the church family.
      • This is what is shown on the ‘Upcoming Events’ menu.
      • The calendar allows different categories of events.
      • Users with the appropriate permissions can add, and modify events.

Next steps:

  • Get people who are responsible for content to own it themselves – it’s easy honest!
  • Agree with Julie a simple process for uploading Bulletins and Pastor’s Printout as PDF
  • Make graphics templates available to others to modify and create their own.
  • Expand ‘For Adults’ out into evergreen, 18-30, etc.
  • Add a prayer item
  • Add content for missions
  • Add ‘personal’ bloging area
  • Add podcast area
  • Add newsletter/mass mail capabilities
  • Look at the template to see whether it’s giving us everything we need.
  • Anything else anyone can think of.
